Feng Shui - An Ancient Art
Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese geomancy studies on improving one's surrounding environment to benefit his/her well-being.
Important Factors That Affect One's Life
一命; 二运; 三风水; 四积德; 五读书
(Literally translate as 1.Fate; 2.Luck; 3.Feng Shui; 4.Do good; 5. Knowledge
Feng Shui rank third as the most important factors to determine one success or smoothness in life.
Though I believe in Feng Shui, I will only selectively practice those theories that I can make sense of.
Let me share with you the Feng Shui theories that I agree with .....
Feng Shui Theories
1. Avoid Pointed Objects & Sharp Edges
Didn't we learnt that pointed objects and sharp edges pose dangers?
Pointed object is like the tip of a knife and sharp edges of any object will be like the blade of the knife.
Corner of any objects such as tables or edge of opposite buildings pointing towards you or your shop is a big NO in Feng Shui. Put it simple, it means won't kana poke or slash.
*kana - Got into a bad scenario.
2. Plants & Fishes
A good environment does boost up morale, thereby encourage one to work harder. Naturally, the returns will be promising.
No Thorny Plants
Cactus are believe to possess the power to ward off evil. However, sharp pointed objects are not advisable in Feng Shui as mention above in theory 1. My advice will be to play safe, not to have any plants with thorns. Aloe Vera is another plant to avoid.
Popular Feng Shui Fishes
Koi fish have beautiful "tattoos" on their backs, which are best viewed from the top.
Keeping them in a pond, rather than a fish tank, will allow a top view of their artistic body art.
Arowana, The Dragon Fish
Arowanas are expensive fish. Unless you are an expert, or it will be hard to associate their beauty and species with a commercial value.
I will advise you to think twice before purchasing these expensive fish.
Some owners feed them with small guppies and frogs. I even saw a owner feeding them with mice. They are aggressive fish, displaying dominance, power and authority.
Even by looking at the photo below, I can feel it's fighter aura. They well-deserved the name "Dragon Fish".
Having these fish reflect on the owner wealth, displaying his power and authority. So having them definitely will boost up one's confidence level.
Here come my favourite - Gold Fish. I will highly recommend them. They are adorable and colourful.
There are large variety of gold fish species to choose from. I prefer those in bright orange colours with beautiful large tails, such as Fantail and Oranda. Orange is an auspicious colour and it brighten up my days too. Swimming in large tails, these goldfish are just like beautiful dancers gracefully waving their dresses.
Check the below videos, aren't they beautiful? They are the Oranda, my favourite type of gold fish.
The top element of a good Feng Shui is harmony. My take will be the Gold Fish. Their round body represent harmony. And their gentleness too promote peace and harmony too.

3. Weath Path
Blocking the doorstep is equivalent to blocking the wealth path. Have a bright and clear doorstep to welcome your clients.
4. Tree Clash (树冲煞)
Tree Clash is referring to trees standing right in front of your door or windows.
Isn't it obvious that a tree in front of your door/window will be blocking your views? So no trees shall be directly in front of your door or window.
For the ground floor, just avoid buying/renting these "Tree Clash" unit. Or you can get a higher floor unit.
When buying or renting units at a higher floor, we can choose a higher level. If we will to get a lower unit as office or home, the young trees may grow up and start blocking your views after a few years.
For example, a young tree of 2 storey height blocked the window view. We then decide to rent a 3rd storey unit to avoid the clash. However, the tree might still grow and reach 4th or 5th storey and that will block your window. There are species of trees that can grow super tall. The good news is here in Singapore most of the trees planted near buildings won't grow taller than 6th storey. So my advice will be to get a unit from 6th floor onwards.
Feng Shui is discovered in ancient China where there is no lamp post. So lamp post are similar to trees that can block your view and signboard. Thus, they too shall to be avoided.
If the unit is for business use, there will be one more reason to avoid "Trees Clash". They can also block your signboard.
In Feng Shui, the reason of avoiding "Tree Clash", is not about blocking one's view or signboard but that it will negatively affect the aura. The consequences will be even more serious.
5. T JUNCTION ROAD CLASH (路冲煞)
A T junction is the intersection of the main and the minor road. Having the shop front directly facing oncoming traffic from minor road is called road clash.
I agreed with not having shop front facing direct traffic not only because of Feng Shui but also the fact that travelling vehicles will swept dirt and dust directly into my shop.
Having my shop just beside the road will too have the same results of bringing in crowds.
The recommended location will be just beside the T junction. Not only we can avoid the "door crash", we can have crowds from 2 walking paths. Besides having 2 paths of walking crowds, there are more surface areas where signage can be installed, giving more advertising exposure. See picture below.
6. Gathering Human Energy (聚人气)
The criteria of a good shop house location along the minor road depends on the waking traffic (see above image, orange box). This infact have to do with the number of shops on that stretch of road. If there are only 1 to 2 shops, it won't be so appealing to shop there. Will you like to shop at a lively place or a dull place? There shall be at least 5 shops along each side of the minor road. If not, then there must be a unique selling point that is strong enough to draw shoppers to specially walk into the minor road. Otherwise is better not to consider these locations.
To sum up: 聚人气 means having more people around to make a more lively environment.
7. Lighting & Space, Yin & Yang
I relate Yin as being inactive and Yang as being active.
Bedroom is a place that one sleep and therefore is Yin. The light shall be dim. Living room is Yang as this is where most of the activity and gathering take place. Same theory goes for offices. Office is Yang, a place to work. We need a bright place to work in. Working on dim place, guess many will fall asleep.
There are some industry that prefer to have dim lights. For example, the entertainment industry, KTV, pub, lounge, etc... One will feel more relax in a dimly lit room. However, isn't darkness scary? This is why entertainment industry have conceal light and more reflective materials in their interior design. So that the place is illuminated and yet not bright.
Another way of brightening the place is to have a high ceiling, which will allow more natural light to come in. This will also help to avoid oppression so that one can work efficiently. We can have high ceiling for the living room, office or any place where one is active. For bedroom, the ceiling can be lower as that is the place we rest.
Of course, most of the time, the height of the ceiling is not determine by us. This is determined by the developer. As in Singapore, most of us live in HDB flats, the height of the ceiling is uniform throughout the whole house, which is about 2.8m, which is quite acceptable for both living room or bedroom.
If you live in private housing, where the bedroom is big, you can consider the canopy bed (bed with curtain, see picture below).
Sleeping in a bed covered with curtain, won't make one feel oppressed. In contrast, one will feel safer and sleep better. We need to feel safe when sleeping, no one like the feeling of sleeping in the open.
8. Clean And Neat
Regardless is your office or home, is good to have a clean and neat environment. Clustering of unwanted things is a No in Feng Shui. So having your offices or home tidy up, will make the whole place more spacious. We need enough space to live well.
Keeping a lot of unnecessary stuffs, is known as hoarding. This is a type of mental health issue too.
So remember to tidy up. In tidying up a workplace, there are 5 steps. Do you know what they are? Click here to read about this 5 steps of tidying.
Signboard Feng Shui
There is Feng Shui for shop locations and environment settings. How about logo & signage? Yes, we can apply Feng Shui elements too.
However, is really difficult to meet both designing concepts and Feng Shui Elements. We can't have best of both worlds. Well, actually we can.
I got a friend who engaged a Feng Shui master and a signage maker to work together. The Feng Shui master request was a must to have gold colour in the logo. If that is not possible, then have it in the internal display. The designing team works on with the gold colour. It was a brilliant signs. All her neighbours sang praise for her new signboard. The logo was extremely elegant in gold. Her business flourish. Everything went so smooth for her. So what you think? Was it because of Feng Shui?
If I do bypass her shop, I will like to take a photo of her signboard and share it here. Stay tuned.
Was Feng Shui real?
It is entirely up to individuals to believe. I guess you do have certain degree of belief or you won't be reading to this point.
But do not get obsessed with all these Feng Shui rules. The best Feng Shui practice is to have a kind heart. Kindness begets kindness. Another important factor is Harmony. Harmony bring wealth/prosperity (和气生财), so avoid cursing someone, swearing and quarreling. Though, we can't be friends with everyone, we try not to blow our top.
